Monument in Chetumal, Quintana Roo
dedicated to Gonzalo Guerrero, his wife
Zazil Ha and their children
IN SEARCH OF GONZALO GUERRERO, FATHER
OF THE FIRST MESTIZO
Gonzalo Guerrero monument Chetumal
This fascinating story actually begins with the birth of Gonzalo
Guerrero back in the early 1470’s at Palos, Andalusia, Spain.
Trained as a military combatant he fought to drive the last of the
Moors out of the Iberian Peninsula by 1492 ending eight centuries
of Islamic occupation. Then he took up his next position of
soldier/sailor on Columbus’s first ocean crossing expedition aboard
the small open carvel vessel, Niña.
This soldier of fortune’s story did not reappear in the annals of
history again until 1511. Gonzalo set sail in good weather from the
Gulf of Darien on the Colombian coast of South America north
bound with looted treasure and slaves.
What happened next is one of the worst nightmare stories that
could happen to anyone.

YAXCABÁ AND TABI, YUCATÁN
  THE TABI KIDS
Yaxcaba
Our second class bus took us on a
very sinuous scenic small village route,
off the main road.
Several taxi drivers were there
competing for our business. Jane and I
had already planned to use whatever
type of transport we could to make the
next leg of our trip.

MUYIL MAYAN RUINS AND SIAN KA'AN
BIOSPHERERESERVE - A SIDE TRIP FROM TULUM

Muyil is a wonderful place to take a nature hike, mingle with
tropical nature and witness some of the most unusual examples
of the Mayan advanced infrastructure that is still functional to
this very day. This is a big place so plan to do a lot of walking.
To enjoy Muyil to its fullest a half day of leisurely poking along
will enhance your pleasurable experience immensely.
Muyil also known  as Chunyaxché still stands as a noteworthy
testimonial to this remarkable Mayan civilization.

impressive collection of outings that are
the foundation for these books, built one
story at a time.
These aren't guide books but idea books.
They are something of another element
not made to compete with guidebooks—
they are made to complement them.

RIO LAGARTOS  is a coastal fishing village north of Tizimín and Valladolid. The name
implies river of alligators, but there are no rivers in Yucatán only alligators. Rio Lagartos
is situated within the nearly 150,000 acre
Ria Lagartos Biosphere Reserve. Most
travelers come here for the guided boat tours that include; lagoon excursions, bird
watching, seasonal migrating birds, sea turtle observations, Mayan curative mud baths,
and fishing expeditions. Ask at
Hotel Villa de Pescadores about guided tours…if you
arrive by bus more than likely a guide will approach you at the terminal.
